Germany Smashes Three Solar Energy Records in Just Two Weeks!

In just two weeks Germany has managed to break three solar energy records! First the Fraunhofer ISE solar energy research institute that monitors solar output in the country noticed a rise to a record 24.24 gigawatts around midday on June 6, 2014. During the same week, solar power systems around Germany generated a total of 1.26 terawatt-hours of energy, and on the following Monday, German solar power took center stage once again by accounting for 50.6 percent of total electricity demand, which means half the total energy powering the country came from photovoltaic panels.

SPOR Solar Battery Charger Helps You Carry the Power of the Sun in Your Pocket

“Two college kids trying to save the world”. That’s the slogan put forth by the team who designed SPOR, and they might very well succeed in that endeavor. SPOR is a self-regenerating solar battery charger and power system for USB devices that can either be charged by an outlet or passively via the sun. It can charge multiple devices at once, and can charge a phone practically as fast as a wall outlet can. Additionally, the device’s shell is customizable to suit anyone’s tastes: it can be 3D-printed from any material you can find, in any color imaginable. How cool is that?

The Window Socket is an idea so fabulously simple, it’s slightly amazing that we haven’t seen one before. Designed by Kyuho Song & Boa Oh, the charger sticks to a window and draws solar power to an internal battery, which enables one to either plug small devices into the outlet right there and then, or save the stored power for use during nighttime hours.

Global Renewable Energy Capacity Has Nearly Doubled to 1,560 Gigawatts Since 2004

In the past nine years, global renewable energy capacity has nearly doubled from 800 gigawatts to 1,560 gigawatts, with solar and wind showing the biggest gains. According to the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century‘s (REN21) Renewables 2014 Global Status Report, worldwide solar PV capacity is 53 times higher than in 2004, while wind power capacity is nearly seven times higher.

India’s National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) is planning a 50 MW photovoltaic project that will be the world’s largest freshwater floating solar power plant! The estimated $64–$72 million project will be set over reservoirs and lakes in the southern state of Kerala. The project was developed with technical assistance from the Kolkota-based Renewable Energy College (REC), and the first pilot operation is due to go online in October, 2014.

Clean technology researchers just killed two birds with one stone by coming up with a new way to capture carbon dioxide and turn it into useful chemical compound via solar energy. In collaboration with New Jersey-based startup, Liquid Light Inc., Princeton University scientists have been able to turn a combination of carbon dioxide and water into formic acid using an electrochemical cell that’s fully powered by solar energy from local utility provider, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G).

For many people who lack access to electricity, the day ends when the sun goes down. But Philips aims to slowly change that through their Gift of Light program. Through it, employees first nominate communities around the world that are desperately in need of light and vote for the most deserving. Once these communities have been identified, employees then install energy-efficient solar-powered lights for both homes and roads. Thanh Son village in Vietnam is among the first communities to receive Philips’ life-changing technology, and further projects will be implemented across 17 countries in the coming months.
