The world’s largest solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, officially opened for business a few days ago, but not all environmentalists are happy about it. The plant consists of 350,000 mirrors spread across 5 square miles, and it works by concentrating sunlight to boil water in a series of enormous towers hooked up to steam generators. That incredible amount of heat does more than just generate power, however; it also fries any birds that happen to fly over the plant.

Just a few weeks ago the world’s largest solar thermal power plant switched online in Nevada, and now the largest solar plant in Latin America is underway just south of the border. Aura Solar I — a 30-megawatt solar farm– is currently under construction in La Paz, Mexico, and it will be the country’s first utility-scale photovoltaic project. The plant will be capable of fulfilling the energy needs of 164,000 people (64 percent of La Paz’s population), but that’s not even the best part – it will also replace a dirty thermoelectric plant that’s been poisoning residents with air pollution for years.

Global aerospace and defense technology company Northrop Grumman is confident that it already has the technology to build an unmanned inflatable aircraft that could explore other worlds. The company announced plans to build a drone that would take advantage of the fierce winds and intense sunlight found on our neighboring planet Venus. Solar panels, heat conversion technology, and the ability to glide would enable the drone to explore for up to a year unaided.

Artist Olafur Eliasson explores the importance of turning artistic potential into environmental action in this inspiring new video created by VICE for The Creators Project. Eliasson discusses his Little Sun – a solar-powered LED lamp that can run for up to 5 hours on a single charge. One in every five people on the planet has no access to electricity, so Eliasson sought to harness solar energy in a creative lamp that provides an affordable and sustainable light source for all. Check out the video above!

Michael Jantzen‘s pavilion proposal is designed as a tourist attraction for the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Its design is intended to sustainably celebrate the great diversity, and the future of food production in the state of California. The shape of the large concrete structure was based on a contour map of a California hill, and boasts dedicated areas for growing crops, as well as space for wind turbines and solar arrays to power the structure in a sustainable way.

Solar Powered Sol-Char Toilet Zaps Poop into Fertilizer Bricks

Researchers at the University of Colorado designed a new toilet called the Sol-Char that zaps poop into biochar using nothing but the sun. Led by Karl Linden, the team installed fiber-optic cables that scorch waste deposited in the toilet to yield dainty briquettes of biochar. These bricks of sanitized human waste are then used as fertilizer, which will hopefully give farmers in developing countries a much-needed boost.
