The moon affects the tides on Earth, helps brightens the night sky, and soon it might also provide us with even more solar power. Tokyo-based Shimizu Corporation wants to install a belt of solar panels 250 miles wide around the equator of our orbiting natural satellite. This massive, 6,800 mile long solar array called the “Luna Ring” would then relay a constant stream of energy to receiving stations on the planet by beaming lasers and microwave transmission. The proposed Luna Ring, according to Shimizu’s specifications, would send 13,000 terawatts of power to Earth.

With 250 days of sunshine a year, Mongolia’s potential for solar energy is vast but mostly underutilized. That’s beginning to change though – a new government sponsored initiative aims to equip traditional dome-like homes called gers (tents made of felt and yak’s wool) with portable solar home systems (SHS) to make life a little easier in the northern highlands. So far, almost 70 percent of nomadic people now have access to electricity thanks to newly installed solar panels.

Earlier this year, Scandinavian flat pack furniture masters IKEA unveiled an easily deployable solar-powered shelter that can provide sturdy, safe housing in an emergency. Designed in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the shelters are ideal for situations such as the ongoing mass displacement of individuals fleeing from the war in Syria. However, as many Syrian refugees enter Lebanon, the Lebanese government has been hesitant to approve the use of the IKEA shelters for fear that they might prove too permanent. Now, after six months of negotiations, the IKEA housing will finally be available to Syrians in Lebanon, but they may not be ready in time to protect many from the harsh winter.

In 2012, Inhabitat featured an invention that promised to turn the world of solar power generation upside down. Rawlemon‘s spherical solar energy-generating globe looked a lot like a giant glass marble on a robotic steel frame, but there was nothing raw about what it achieved: the sun-tracking device was capable of concentrating sunlight (and moonlight) up to 10,000 times–making it 35 percent more efficient than traditional dual-axis photovoltaic designs. Bolstered by the incredible enthusiasm for their first design, the scientists at Rawlemon are back with an updated version–behold the Betaray!

Look, up in the sky — it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the Heliotrope! The brainchild of Architect Ralph Disch, this rotating solar home was the seed for the extraordinary Sonnenschiff Solar Development and the modern solar movement in Germany. The home takes full advantage of the sun by rotating with it, allowing daylight to course though its triple-pane windows and energize its large roof-mounted solar array and solar thermal pipes. The result is one of the first zero-energy modern homes in the world — one that actually ends up generating five times the energy it consumes.

Panasonic recently launched “Cut Out the Darkness”, a contest designed to help people living in regions without electricity. The contest challenges entrants to design affordable cut-out lantern shades using easy-to-use online applications, and it supports the company’s goal to deliver 100,000 solar lanterns to off-grid communities by 2018. The contest was developed with Japanese consultancy EcoNetworks, and it will be open until the end of January.

Construction has just begun on a futuristic farming project in Japan’s Fukushima prefecture. A combination farm and solar park, the Renewable Energy Village will contain 120 photovoltaic panels that will generate about 30 kilowatts of power to be sold to a local utility company. Crops will be grown beneath those panels in what’s being called a “solar sharing” layout. Of course, the biggest question on most people’s minds isn’t how much energy the project will generate, but whether it’s safe to grow crops in radiation-contaminated soil.

Last year, California residents installed more rooftop solar capacity in one year than in the previous thirty combined! In 2013 alone, the state added a whopping 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity to their homes, up from an already impressive 500 MW in 2012. The incredible spike can be attributed in part to the increasing affordability of photovoltaic panels.

Education funding always seems to be last on the list for politicians (even though it should be the first). Schools in Croatia face the same problem, which has spurred one enterprising elementary school to come up with a plan. Ostrog Elementary School in Kastel Luksic, hopes to change the way schools in Croatia consume and produce energy through the installation of renewable systems, retrofitted buildings and a hands-on approach to environmental literacy among their students. If Ostrog’s crowdfunding campaign is successful, they could be a model for other schools to go off-grid, freeing up valuable funds for education.

MidAmerican Solar and SunPower have announced that the first portion of one of the largest solar power plants in the United States is now feeding into the California independent service operator (ISO) grid. The photovoltaic Solar Star project, a co-located facility in Kern and Los Angeles Counties, is currently supplying 57MW to the grid, and will ultimately provide enough electricity to power 255,000 homes when all 579MW goes online in 2015.
